Be bored… I dare you! It’s a powerful thing

Boredom has become a dirty word in our society!

It’s taboo to be bored.  Day dreaming is a lost art!

We live in a high-tech world, where you can run your business from a smart phone, while sipping a pumpkin spice latte at a local coffee shop!

We live in a time, where you can work on your lap top, return an email on your tablet, and text a customer from your phone all at once!

Pretty awesome…right?  Well…yes…and no.

Being Bored is a powerful thing!  It’s a time to refresh, to think, to plan, to solve, to create, to invent and even experiment.

Boredom and it’s 1st cousin…Day Dreaming…are when our best ideas come to be!  This is a time when you dip into your subconscious and strange as it may sound…get things done.

However, we as a culture have generally moved past boredom and day dreaming and adopted a lifestyle of being connected, of moving fast, of working on many projects at the same time…of multi-tasking.  Is multi-tasking productive?  In some cases, yes.  But multi-tasking is actually a bit of an oxymoron…because truthfully, when we multi task we keep starting new projects, when another project is already in progress.  The new projects steal time, energy and creativity from the projects that started before them.  In most cases, it takes longer to get each project done and/or they very likely will lack in the creativity and detail we wish them to entail.

Now, you might think you are powerful enough to overpower these multi-tasking barriers…and that’s ok.  But the research and science are there.

The average adult checks email 74 times per day…and switches tasks 500 times per day.  This does not bode well for our old friends:  Focus, Creativity & Productivity.

Boredom is ok!  You will not fail if you day dream.  You might just come up with your next brilliant idea…or find the answer to that problem that has been vexing you!
