Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter, Spay & Save
A program you should know about
Spay & Save is a very successful program of ASAP (Animal Shelter Alliance of Portland – Washington County Animal Services is a founding member!) that assists low-income families and their cats by offering affordable spay and neuter surgeries for those who qualify. All surgeries are performed by licensed veterinarians and assisted by skilled, caring support teams. The service is made possible by charitable donations.
“At least twice a month, clients can bring their cats to the Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter. We transport the cats to the Cat Adoption Team in Sherwood, where their veterinary team performs the surgeries. We bring them back at the end of the day, and they are reunited with their grateful owners,” says Operations Supervisor Myndi Petersen.
Since Spay & Save started in 2010, more than 90,000 cats in the Portland metro area have been spayed or neutered through this program. “We have seen a dramatic decline in the number of cats coming to our shelter and to shelters throughout the Portland area,” says Petersen. “We know that most of that decline can be attributed to the success of the Spay & Save Program.”
In the past 9 years, ASAP has reduced euthanasia in Portland’s shelters by 90% and now saves 95% of cats and dogs – making our community one of the safest for pets in the nation!
