KPTV FOX Channel 12: Happy 98th Birthday Celebration to WWII Veteran Urban Kluthe

By KPTV Staff15 Urban Kluthe and Mayor Doyle

The city of Beaverton helped host a very special birthday party in honor of a hero.

City leaders and the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District celebrated with the friends and family of Urban Kluthe for his 98th birthday on April 13.

The celebration took place at Beaverton’s Elsie Stuhr Center, which provides food, fitness classes and social activities specifically geared toward people 55 years of age and older.

Kluthe was given a plaque that said, “Presented to Urban Kluthe, In recognition of your service in the Army Air Corps During World War II. Happy 98th Birthday. Your friends at Elsie Stuhr.”

Kluthe was given a big and bright birthday cake featuring an Army Air Corps plane, an American flag, playing cards and a billiard set.

It seems pool and cards are two of Kluthe’s favorite activities at Elsie Stuhr.

In fact, he can often be found playing a few hands in the Stuhr Center’s poker area, which he helped to establish at the center.

People lined up to shake Kluthe’s hand on his birthday and thank him for his service, including Beaverton Police Department officers, Mayor Denny Doyle and other military veterans.

“It’s a pleasure to be able to celebrate and honor one of our treasured veterans,” said Mayor Doyle. “Urban and all the members of the Greatest Generation deserve our eternal gratitude.”
