Meet Beaverton’s Super Kids: Highlighting local kids who excel at school

27 Vincent Hong picThis month’s super kid features 7 year old Vincent, a second grader at Alberta Rider Elementary School in Bull Mountain. Vincent is a super kid because he is reading 1 year above grade level!

Introducing Vincent

Before he attended 1st grade, Vincent only spoke Vietnamese and Chinese at home. He only knew a little English through cartoons, movies and TV. He met a lot of difficulties in the first two months of school because his English was not as good as native English speaking children. When his parents had their first conference with his teacher, the teacher brought up some concerns about his English (Reading and Writing). After the conference, his parents were referred by a family member to the Kumon Reading program.

Vincent has been attending Kumon for only eight months and his reading level went from below average to one whole grade above grade level. His English has gotten better and he has exceeded his grade level benchmark at school.

Vincent received recognition for his reading ability with two awards. The first one was “Hats off to You for Excellent Reading”. The second one was an award for participating in the NEA’s Read Across America.

His parents are very happy for him as he continues to excel beyond grade level.
