We got a puppy for Christmas! Now what?

I’ve heard people say that you shouldn’t get a puppy at Christmas, but we did. How can we be responsible dog owners?

For some people with extra time off, the holidays might be the best time to bring home a new pet! To stay successful going forward, you’ll want a good team, including a veterinarian, a dog trainer and possibly a pet sitter or boarding kennel. Starting a relationship with these professionals right away will prevent certain problems and give you a trusted resource when issues do arise. In addition to vaccinations and a microchip, socialization and training should be top priorities. Don’t forget to keep your dog licensed, too!

My cat is getting quite old and I’m afraid I’ll have to make an end of life decision soon, but I don’t know what to do. Can I bring her to you?

We’re so sorry to hear that it will soon be that time for your kitty. Euthanasia can be hard for any animal caretaker, no matter what the circumstances. We do not offer euthanasia services to the general public, and instead would refer you to your pet’s veterinarian. They are in the best position to help you make a decision and assist with your pet’s passing. If you don’t currently have a veterinarian, we have a list of resources available on our website under “Veterinary Care.”

Each month, you will have the chance to have your questions answered by the animal shelter. Email your questions to Jennifer_Keene@co.washington.or.us and we will try to answer as many as possible.
