4-Year-Old’s Quick Thinking Saves Grandma: Meet Nova, a little hero with a big heart

A 4-year-old girl in Beaverton is being praised for her quick thinking after helping first responders reach her injured grandmother.
The moment was captured April 17 on a Ring camera, as Nova Hallet directed responders toward the apartment, saying, “It’s in here? Yeah,” while they moved in to help. Nova’s mom, Haley Rose, said she was at work when she got an alert through the Ring system and then learned what had happened. Rose recalled being told, “Your daughter did a great thing getting help.”
Beaverton police say Nova recognized her grandmother needed help, flagged down a neighbor to call 9-1-1, and then led officers to the apartment when they arrived. Police said Nova’s grandmother was confused and disoriented after falling and hitting her head, and responders quickly stepped in to assist.
Rose said she’s proud of how clearly Nova guided officers to her grandmother.
“Her telling the cops like, ‘oh, it’s right here, it’s right here, she’s inside’. It’s like heartwarming to hear, to see a 4-year-old doing that,” Rose said.
Nova’s 76-year-old grandmother was taken to the hospital. Nova told her mom she remembers seeing her grandma fall, but she doesn’t know how it happened. Surveillance video shows the grandmother with a bloody head after the fall. In the Ring clip, an officer can be heard reassuring the family.
The Beaverton Police Department praised Nova’s bravery and awareness, especially for someone so young. Another Ring moment captured an officer encouraging her: “Good job, you did a good job, sweetheart.”
Nova’s grandmother is now home. The Beaverton Police Department is nominating Nova for a community life-saving award, and Rose says she’s been told her daughter has a good shot at winning.
