A couple days in the life of an auto broker (He thought me a miracle man)

Hello Loyal Beaverton Readers,

I appreciate everyone writing in and calling. I just renewed my automotive dealers’ license, so I am able to assist all of you with your vehicle needs for 3 more years.

For January, I want to talk about Andy from Beaverton. Andy called last week and wanted help selling his Toyota Tundra, as he no longer needed a full-sized truck. He called me because he did not want to accept a low trade in value at a dealership or have a bunch of strangers coming to his home. Andy asked if he could stop by to show me his truck and of course I agreed.

Andy arrived 15 minutes later and after some paperwork, he said he would leave his truck and walk home (he lived that close, lol!).

I listed the truck that same afternoon and within 45 minutes, I had two appointments set for the following day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

Fast forward to the next morning and a customer drove all the way from Hood River to see the truck. He was very nice, did a thorough test drive and then bought it on the spot. This might be the quickest turn around ever!

I called Andy to inform him the truck had already sold and I got him $1000 more than he wanted for it. Andy was very happy and said he would leave work early to pick up his check. When he arrived, he was so happy that he asked me if I could find him a very rare car he was having trouble finding: an Acura TLX A-Spec sedan AWD, in White with Red interior. Very rare indeed but not impossible if you have the right connections. I took the challenge and got right to it.

The obvious first call was to my Acura supplier who could check regional inventory. 30 minutes later, I get a call back and was told not only could get the exact car we were looking for, but that it was on a lot and could be available for pick up by 4pm!

When I told Andy the good news, he thought I was a miracle man. He was even more amazed when I told him I was able to negotiate a sizable discount. Andy said he was afraid of some ‘catch’ or funny business (I guess he had a bad experience at a dealership before) so was very happy that I would be going with him to pick up the car. The paperwork was all ready waiting for us so after less than 30 minutes, we were out the door, no fuss.

If anyone is wondering what an auto broker does, now you know.
