A pet in a hot car!? What should I do?
Each month, you will have the chance to have your questions answered by the animal shelter. Email your questions to Jennifer_Keene@co.washington.or.us and we will try to answer as many as possible.
What should I do if I see a dog in a car on a hot day?
First of all, stay calm and observe the situation. Did you see when the owner departed? Is the car on with AC running? What is the dog’s behavior like? Some dogs bark when their owner leaves or if strangers approach no matter what the weather. If the dog is showing signs of distress due to heat (excessive panting, vomiting, lethargy, collapse, etc), call 911. Follow their instructions and wait with the animal for help to arrive.
My beloved cat passed away and I want to donate as many of her things as possible to help other pets. What items can I donate?
We are so sorry for your loss and want to thank you for your generous spirit at such a difficult time. We can gratefully accept unopened food and treats here at the Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter in Hillsboro.
- For open food, try FIDO at fidoanimeals.org (various drop off locations on their website).
- For medications, see Paw Team’s list of items they accept at pawteam.org/donate.
- For usable pet items in good condition, we suggest Cat Adoption Team’s Thrift Store. See their entire list at catthriftstore.org/donation-guidelines.
