After 23 years, Marge got a brand new car: Step by step process on how a deal is done

Marge was at Metro Car Care (and as many of you long-time readers know, I am not shy about plugging them), and while waiting for service on her 2003 Buick Park Avenue with only 72k miles on it, she picked up a copy of this paper.

She mentioned to the Metro person in the lobby that she was looking to get a new Subaru but already had a bad experience at the dealerships she had visited. They wanted to upsell the new car with expensive dealer installed accessories while not offering very much trade in value on the price of her low mileage Buick. Since Marge is in her 80s, and a woman, she got the feeling they did not take her seriously.

The Metro staff person suggested that she needed a person on her side, the customer. A person who is used to dealing with salesmen and dealerships. Since she lives in the Beaverton area, they recommended me, The Beaverton Car Guy.

Marge called me from the lobby of Metro and we met up a few days later. I first took her to test drive a Toyota 4Runner for comparison before heading over the Subaru dealership the next day to test drive the Outback Touring model.

When we got to the Subaru Dealership, she got to test drive two different Outback Touring models. The first one came with an economical 2.5 liter, 4 cylinder engine and this drove fine. The second test drive was the Touring XT version. This Outback was turbocharged with nearly 80 more horsepower. Marge mentioned she had owned several sports cars in the past and it was a kick to have the pleasure of seeing Marge drive. And I mean, even at 84, SHE CAN DRIVE!

There was no doubt she wanted the XT model but insisted on the Java Brown interior, something that dealership did not have. Not to worry, I told Marge, because I have contacts. The next day, bright and early, I began the search for a 2026 Subaru Outback Touring XT with the Java Brown interior. After several calls, I was told that there was only one of these cars currently in the entire PNW. I don’t know which dealership it was supposed to head to but it didn’t matter because within 24 hours, it would be at my office.

Not only were there zero dealer installed accessories, but we also received nearly $3,000 off of the MSRP, and free delivery along with the paperwork. This meant that Marge did not have to set foot into another dealership and did not have to deal with sales folk.

Once the car arrived, I called Marge to alert her I was on my way over with her new Outback. As expected, she asked what we were going to do with the old Buick. I told her that I was way ahead in the game and had already found a buyer; someone I knew who was looking for a second vehicle with low miles and they were not picky about make, model or color if the price was right.

Marge was over the moon happy. I arrived with the new car and we completed the paperwork. So all said and done, Marge saved $5500 by simply asking for assistance. Another happy neighbor. It was a true pleasure.
