An Attitude of Gratitude: How to give thanks during crazy times
Since mid-July, signs of Christmas have been creeping up around the area. Now that Halloween has past, many are starting to enter into the frenzy of buying gifts, scheduling gatherings, and worrying about time with, or without family.
What can get overlooked is the Thanksgiving Holiday. Whereas we could go down a different path discussing the origins of Thanksgiving with all the good, the bad, and the ugly, what I would like to focus on is… Giving Thanks!
With all the unrest in our city, region, state, country, and world – one might ask:
What is there to be thankful for?
I could go on and on about your health, your family, the beauty of the flowers, etc.… The reality for some is that they are sick, their family is not speaking to them, and it is Fall and most of the flowers have since died.
The reality is that YOU must decide what you are thankful for. Maybe it is a cup of Ramen noodles, a dry place to lay your head, or a text/call from a neighbor. I suspect that even with all the stress in the world you could find ONE THING that you could be thankful for today.
Once you have something (or somethings) to be thankful for – write them down. In fact, challenge yourself to get a simple spiral bound notebook and start a list of things that you are thankful for. Work to add at least one item each day. Heck, make a goal to list 1000 different things you are thankful for.
As time goes on you will have pages and pages of things that you can reflect upon and remind yourself of the blessings you have and have experienced. When times get tough, as they often do, pull out this notebook and review all that you have written.
