April is Child Abuse Awareness Month

Each April, communities across the nation observe Child Abuse Awareness Month. It is a time dedicated to recognizing the importance of safe, stable, and nurturing environments for every child. It is both a call to action and a reminder that protecting children is a shared responsibility. In Beaverton, this month offers an opportunity to highlight the work being done locally and to encourage residents to stay informed, vigilant, and engaged.

Child abuse can take many forms, including physical harm, emotional maltreatment, neglect, and sexual abuse. Its impacts are profound, often shaping a child’s health, development, and well-being long into adulthood. Raising awareness helps ensure that community members know the signs, understand how to report concerns, and feel empowered to support families before harm occurs.

Over the past year, the Beaverton Police Department investigated 188 child sex abuse cases. During that same period, the department received 1415 referrals from our community related to suspected physical or sexual abuse or neglect. The community referrals led to 95 arrests for child abuse related offenses. These numbers underscore the importance of continued education, prevention efforts, and community involvement.

Throughout April, the Beaverton Police Department encourages residents to join local awareness events, explore available resources, and take small actions that make a meaningful difference like checking in on families, supporting community organizations, and speaking up when something feels wrong. At the Beaverton Public Safety Center, pinwheels will be displayed throughout the property as a visual reminder of this commitment. These pinwheels symbolize the happy, healthy childhood every child deserves.
