Ask The Beaverton Car Guy: Here are a few quick Winter vehicle tips

By Larry “The Car Guy“ Ferguson

Hello loyal Beaverton Readers!

Many thanks to all who have written and called in regarding the last few articles. I really appreciate your feedback and questions.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve have heard from a few readers asking for quick winter vehicle maintenance tips. Here are a few tips I think are very important

Check the Tires

The Pacific Northwest rainy and cold season be in full swing, so you will want your tires ready for the wet roads. Check the tread on your tires. An age-old tip for this is to insert a penny with Lincoln’s head upside down into your tire tread. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, it’s time to replace the tire. While you are examining your tires, be sure to check the tire pressure. Also, throw your chains into the back of the vehicle. You’ll need them before you know it, especially if you’re headed into the mountains.

Check the Battery

Your vehicle’s battery should be fully charged and make sure the connections are clean, tight, and free of corrosion. Cold weather puts batteries under stress so if your battery is not up to par the cooler weather could push it over the edge.

Check the Windshield Wipers

Your wiper blades are vital to safe driving in the rain. The rubber from the blades should be flexible and free of cracks. Blades that leave streaks, skip sections of your windshield, or make a stuttering sound while in use need to be replaced.

Check the Heater and Defroster

Make sure your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems are all ready for extra wintertime use. Check filters to make sure they are free of debris and replace as needed.

Check the Fluids

Before we roll into winter you want to make sure your fluids are clean and filled to the minimum safety level. This includes coolant, washer fluid, and fluids for transmission, brake, and power steering.
