Beaverton is a special place: Embracing the power of community

As we navigate through challenging times, it’s natural to feel anxious about the future. But here in Beaverton, we have the power to create change—starting with the community we build together. The strength of our city comes from the connections we form, the ways we support each other, and the resilience we create as a community.

In my recent work, I’ve been focused on strengthening community both at home and abroad. In a recent trip with the State Department, I been connected with leaders from around the world. As mayors and elected officials, we learned from each other, and had the opportunity to share the values that make Beaverton such a special place.

While it may sometimes feel like we’re drifting away from these ideals, we all have a role in ensuring that community remains a central value. A lesson I’ve learned along the way is the importance of building relationships. Leadership is based on trust and connection, and by making an effort to understand and collaborate with others, we create a network of support that helps us through difficult times. In our work together, kindness serves as the foundation for understanding and resolution, even in the face of disagreement. It’s through these values that we make real progress in our community.

Building community isn’t just about living in the same place—it’s about working together, caring for one another, and empowering our neighbors. Whether it’s lending a hand to someone in need or offering your skills to help a local group, every act of kindness strengthens our bonds and makes us more resilient. In times of difficulty, it’s these everyday actions that help us move forward and stay connected.

We also thrive by recognizing the value of diversity and inclusivity. By ensuring that every resident feels supported and welcomed, we build a stronger Beaverton. We know that we work best when everyone feels involved and included in decisions, and when we embrace the common humanity in one another. It’s through unity and collaboration that we continue to grow as a community.
