Vine maples are native to forest understories and along stream banks but can also be found out in the open. They usually grow vine like, crooked, and sprawled out in forest settings with multiple stems but stay fairly symmetrical out in the open.

Reaching anywhere from 6 to 35 feet tall is considered a large shrub to small tree. In the autumn the vine maple displays red-, orange-, and yellow-colored leaves which makes it a very attractive addition to any yard.
