Empty adoption kennels are a sign of success at the shelter
The Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter is SO MUCH MORE than adoptions
We’ve all seen the commercial with the sad looking dogs in cages and the melancholy Sarah McLachlan song, encouraging people to adopt from shelters. It makes sense that when most people think of animal shelters, they automatically think of adoptions. Adoptions are one of the most fun things we get to do at the Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter.
If you’ve stopped by in the last few years to look at animals, you may have noticed that we have fewer animals available for adoption than we did in years past. We want to reassure you that having fewer animals in shelters is really a good thing for everyone – especially the pets.
In Washington County, we help animals through so much more than adoptions:
- We reunite many lost animals with their owners.
- We transfer animals to partner shelters and rescue groups for adoption.
- We provide medical treatment to animals who come in as lost or stray.
- We investigate dog bites, animal cruelty and neglect.
- We care for animals in emergency situations.
Although not the biggest part of our operations, adoptions will always be an important and necessary part of the services we offer. One of our goals is for our community to learn about and understand the importance and value of our other services as well. When you think of our shelter, remember that we are so much more than just adoptions!
