Jason Barker at Fresh Start Detail & Ceramic Coating Co. is putting the final touches on a gorgeous Porsche 944. The main body is spotless and ripped straight from an airbrushed magazine. He describes in gleeful detail the process of achieving a glossy, shiny finish.

Not long after working on the Porsche, a customer stopped in to check out the ceramic finish on his dream Audi. He was in awe, cooing over its beauty.

“These are the fun jobs because the contrast before and after really looks good,” Jason said.

Fresh Start is a premier auto detailing service and ceramic coating provider. Jason and his team offer full detailing packages that thoroughly clean and revitalize the interior and exterior, paint correction, high-end ceramic coating – and more.

Jason, who grew up around race cars and developed an early passion for them, bought the business in the 90’s Detailing was a major knowledge gap for him at the time so he learned as he went, and customer reactions helped guide him.

Jason didn’t start the business with a passion for detailing, but seeing the industry evolve, trying to stay on the leading edge of techniques, like when ceramic coatings were invented, is how he learned to love it.

He also lives for the emotions from customers “freaking out” when they see the finished product. While many of his gigs involve daily drivers that make them look better, the high-end transformations that leave their owners speechless are special. “Some people lose it. They hug you, bring you a tray of brownies they made. That’s when you know you’re doing things right.”

Despite earning a reputation that warrants premium prices that ensure the job is done right, Jason prides himself on integrity and creating a no-pressure, warm atmosphere. “I hate sales. The best-case scenario for me is someone asking and wanting me to do something. Then I don’t have to sell them on something, and I can even downsell them.” Jason says he turns down 25-30% of all prospective jobs because he thinks it isn’t worth it for them.

“It makes me feel good, because I’m not selling someone on something they don’t need or can’t afford. I can’t live that way.” Jason says this earns people’s trust – which is invaluable. And he’s had many return to him years later when they’re ready and able to afford a particular service.

The cost also includes Jason’s support and advice. He wants people to enjoy their finishes and maintain them for a long time. Like with the Audi described earlier: “For the next seven years, I’m doing a free wash on his car every year. I’m inspecting it. All of that’s included in the price. And if you got something on your car, don’t damage it by trying to fix it. Bring it by, and in five minutes, I’ll fix it.”

“I was shocked when I learned how many homeless children are in Washington County. I was like, no, in my area and my neighborhood, when we can fix things like that, that’s exactly what I want to do.”
