Groceries and more, a friend at your door: Store to Door Nourishes Body and Mind—And Builds Connection

At first glance, Store to Door may look like a grocery delivery service. It is a lifeline of human connection for older adults and people living with disabilities across Beaverton and Portland.

Founded more than 36 years ago, Store to Door serves people for whom going to the store is a challenge. Store to Door delivers groceries over 12,000 times a year. Nearly all Store to Door clients live alone, with limited social contact. Addressing that isolation is central to the organization’s mission.

What truly sets Store to Door apart is its relationship-based approach. Clients do not place orders through an app. Instead, they receive a weekly phone call from a real person who takes time to listen, chat, and learn their preferences. Store to Door callers, shoppers, and delivery volunteers—known as kindness couriers—shop carefully for everyone, deliver groceries, prescription medications, and other essentials to the door. And the Kindness Couriers can help unpack, open jars, or simply stay for a conversation.

Those moments matter. Loneliness and social isolation have been shown to negatively impact physical and mental health, and Store to Door’s consistent, friendly presence helps counter both. As one client shared in a recent Southeast Examiner article, the weekly call feels “like talking to a friend,” offering reassurance along with food.

In addition to grocery delivery, Store to Door offers friendly phone check-ins, personalized resource referrals, and free food boxes for low-income clients, further strengthening safety and well-being. Store to Door serves people of all income levels, with delivery services offered on a sliding scale, starting at no cost for qualifying seniors—making it both accessible and deeply personal.

Community members are invited to get involved. If you are interested in volunteering, or if you know a neighbor or friend who could use affordable, personable grocery help from Store to Door’s services, visit storetodooroforegon.org to learn more or get in touch.
