Health & Happiness: Create balance

By Camille Keith

Many people take vacations during the summer, but it’s important to make time to rest on a regular basis. The end of summer is marked by Fall Equinox, when day and night are equal. As nature moves toward balance, how can you create more balance in your life?

Maybe you are trying to improve your work/life balance. Take regular breaks while at work. If you have a job where you sit at a desk all day, take a couple minutes to stand up and walk around. You may find yourself better able to focus after taking a break. At the end of the day, try to leave any projects at work. Focus on being fully present when you’re at home.

You might also notice where you can improve your feeling of balance at home. Do you feel overwhelmed trying to care for family members? Try to schedule some alone time, and focus on doing things you enjoy. Practicing self-care can help you feel more balanced, and have more energy to take care of others.

Remember that self-care includes taking care of your whole self, balancing body, mind, and spirit. Notice when you feel the most balanced. What kind of activities help you recharge? There are always going to be some things you enjoy more than others. Take time to reflect. Do you feel satisfied by the balance? If not, it may be time to make a change. Counseling can help support you in creating more balance in your life.
