Helping older adults with holiday loneliness: 3 tips for a more enjoyable holiday

#SeniorLiving

The holidays should be a time for togetherness and joy in celebrating the season.

But for many older adults, the holidays can be a time of loneliness and isolation. If you or a loved one is in that situation, we want to offer some advice:

Find ways to be with others: Even If you can’t celebrate with your family but still want to be around others, you can attend services at a place of worship or volunteer with a community organization.

Make it a special day! Even if you’re spending Christmas alone, head out to the grocery store in advance to either pick up ingredients for a nice dinner or a ready-made holiday meal. Have a book or movie (or both) you’ve been waiting a while to take in. Celebrate in your own way!

Stay off social media If being with family isn’t possible, seeing pictures of other families together can cause any feelings of sadness to grow. Focus on making the day a good one for you, without getting drawn into what other people may be doing.
