“I’ll figure it out” is NOT an emergency plan

“I’ll figure it out” is NOT an emergency plan

If experience has taught us anything, it’s this: surprises are rarely fun, especially when they are made of emergencies. You are relaxing watching your favorite show and the power goes out. Or an ice storm is coming or an unannounced earthquake occurs, let alone flooding or a health scare such as a heart attack. Would you know what to do? Many of us are still relying on the emergency plan known as “I’ll figure it out when it happens’.

However, if you ask the following communities if they were prepared when unexpected flooding occurred in Texas, or after the earthquake in California or the sweeping fire in Hawaii, they would say no. Knowing your exits, what to have ready to take in a moment’s notice, where your first aid kit is or how to provide basic emergency care can save your life, and the life of another.

Here’s the truth:

Emergencies don’t care how organized you are in every other area of life. Natural disasters, medical events, or extended power outages have a way of showing up uninvited—and usually at the worst possible time. The good news? A little planning goes a very long way, and it doesn’t require a bunker or a year’s supply of canned beans.

Emergency planning is really about peace of mind. It’s knowing who to call, where to go, what medications or documents you need, and how to stay safe and comfortable if life is disrupted for a few hours—or a few days. It’s also about making decisions before stress takes over and common sense takes a coffee break.
