Live healthier, longer and happier: Tips for eating well as we age

As we grow older, our bodies and lifestyles change—and so do our nutritional needs. Eating well in our later years isn’t just about maintaining weight; it’s about fueling energy, supporting immunity, and keeping our minds sharp.
One of the biggest shifts that occurs with age is a slower metabolism. This means older adults may need fewer calories but more nutrients. Choosing foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber—like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins—can help meet those needs without adding excess calories.
Protein becomes especially important as we age, helping to preserve muscle strength and support bone health. Fish, poultry, beans, and eggs are excellent choices. Calcium and vitamin D are also vital to maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of fractures.
Hydration can be another challenge. With a reduced sense of thirst, older adults should make a conscious effort to drink water regularly, even when they don’t feel thirsty. Herbal teas, soups, and water-rich fruits like oranges and melons can also help.
Finally, food is more than just fuel—it’s connection. Shared meals can combat loneliness and make eating more enjoyable. Simple routines like cooking with family, joining a senior lunch program, or eating outdoors can bring both nourishment and joy.
A balanced diet, plenty of fluids, and shared meals all add up to one thing: living healthier, longer, and happier at every age.
