November is Soup Season! Show compassion to those in need

In my house, November marks the beginning of soup season. As the cold, rainy days settle in, the thought of curling up indoors with a warm bowl of soup becomes increasingly inviting. However, while many of us relish this comfort, not everyone has that luxury. The reality is that, despite improvements, there are still individuals in our community who lack a roof over their heads.

Imagine waking up to a chilly morning where the temperature hovers around 35 degrees and rain pours relentlessly. For those without a home, such conditions make life exceptionally tough. This challenge intensifies for individuals facing serious health issues or battling addictions. The struggle is compounded, making it harder for them to find relief or support.

As a community, it is crucial that we show compassion and grace to those in need. That’s why I fought for funding from the state, federal, and county levels. With that funding we are opening a new year-round shelter off of Beaverton Hillsdale Highway this month. This facility is not just a roof over someone’s head; it is a foundational support system that offers a dry, warm place to lay down at night.

Without this baseline support, starting each day becomes a significant hurdle. When you lack basic shelter, your chances of moving forward diminish. People need pathways to escape their situations, and fortunately, we are taking steps to provide those ladders out of homelessness.

Through our shelter, homelessness access centers, street outreach initiatives by non-profits, and the dedicated efforts of the Beaverton bike team, we are connecting individuals with the resources they need. Our goal is simple: to ensure that everyone in our community can enjoy soup season and the warmth and comfort it represents.”
