Using Water to Power the Future: Sexton Mountain Pump Station Complete
The Sexton Mountain Pump Station, located near Southwest Murray Boulevard and Sexton Mountain Drive, has been upgraded with new equipment and improvements increasing the resiliency and efficiency of this critical water infrastructure.
As the city’s primary pump station and only one capable of lifting water to the Cooper Mountain Reservoir, these investments play a critical role in ensuring increased capacity and reliability making sure drinking water and fire protection are available when needed.
In addition to various pump, electrical, and water line upgrades, the project also features the introduction of a hydropower turbine, which transfers the energy created by moving water into useable electricity. The new turbine is estimated to generate about 426 megawatt hours of renewable electricity per year – or enough energy to power 40 average homes for one year – offsetting approximately 27 percent of the pump station’s energy load.
These infrastructure upgrades essentially turn the city’s water delivery system into a renewable energy power generator, making Beaverton one of the first cities in Oregon to add hydropower to its drinking water system.
This Sexton Mountain Pump Station is one of many infrastructure improvement projects the city has planned to upgrade its water supply in a changing climate. The project was made possible in part by funding provided by the Energy Trust of Oregon for the new hydropower turbine, related analysis, and engineering work.

The city is updating its Transportation System Plan and wants to hear from you! Bring the whole family and connect with your neighbors in this fun hands-on activity.
The updated Transportation System Plan will determine city transportation policies and investments over the next 20 years.
