Beaverton Shelter Celebrates One Year of Service to the Community

The Beaverton Shelter, located at 11390 SW Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway, is celebrating its one-year anniversary since opening its doors in November 2024. This milestone marks a significant achievement in the city’s ongoing efforts to address homelessness.

The shelter, a collaborative effort between the city, Washington County, and various partner governments and agencies, provides a safe haven for individuals experiencing homelessness. It offers year-round services and assistance with housing.

Support for Beaverton’s Vulnerable Communities – Beaverton has made significant strides in supporting people experiencing homelessness, offering a range of successful services to meet needs and connect people to housing.

Safe Parking Program: This initiative provides a safe and legal place for individuals living out of their vehicles.
Beaverton City Library: The library has become a hub of support, with community resource specialists from Project Homeless Connect available during library hours. They assist with referrals to essential services like childcare, shelter, energy and rent assistance, and Oregon Health Plan enrollment.
Beaverton Police Department Bike Team: This team focuses on proactive patrols and problem-solving in the downtown core, city parks, and transit centers.

How to Prepare Your Home Plumbing for Winter Weather – As the cold season approaches, it’s essential to protect your home plumbing from freezing pipes. When water freezes, it expands and can cause pipes to burst, leading to costly repairs and potential flood damage.

Focus on pipes exposed to severe cold, like outdoor faucets and water sprinkler lines. Also, keep an eye on pipes in unheated areas like basements, crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.

Before winter, detach hoses from outside faucets, turn off and drain sprinkler systems, and insulate outdoor faucets. Inside, use foam pipe insulators or insulated pipe covers to insulate pipes in unheated areas.

When the temperature drops below zero, let the faucet furthest from your water meter drip slowly to prevent freezing. Open kitchen and bathroom cabinets to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes.

If a pipe freezes, use a hair dryer or heat lamp to thaw it slowly. If a pipe bursts, shut off the main water supply and contact a plumber.

Reminder: Holiday Hauling Schedule – Your garbage and recycling haulers work every weekday except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Weather-dependent, those are the only expected disruptions to the normal schedule.

From Thursday, Dec. 25, through Friday, Dec. 26, and Thursday, Jan. 1, through Friday, Jan. 2, 2026, garbage, recycling, and compost will be delayed by one day. Please remember to set your containers out by 6 a.m. on your adjusted collection day. Check the list below to verify your actual service day this holiday season.

Monday through Wednesday: Collected normally
Thursday: Collected Friday
Friday: Collected Saturday

Keep Your Gifts Safe This Holiday Season! The holiday shopping season is here, and the Beaverton Police Department wants to help you keep your package deliveries safe and sound. With nearly 25 percent of all holiday shopping expected to be done online this year, it’s important to make sure your gifts arrive safely at your doorstep.

The Beaverton Police Department has some tips to keep your packages safe:

Add Package Insurance: Many online retailers now offer package protection during checkout. Take advantage of this for peace of mind when shipping valuable items.
Ship to a Store or Use a Package Receiving Service: Having your packages delivered to a secure location where you can pick them up is an easy way to keep your presents safe.
Check in with Your Neighbors: The good neighbor benefit is twofold. First, your package might have been delivered to the wrong address, so checking in with your neighbors could help recover it. Second, if you know you won’t be home for a delivery, ask your neighbors to keep an eye out for your package and hold it in a safe spot until you get home. You can offer the same to them!
Use Home Security Cameras: If your package does get stolen, having a photo or video of the suspect can be helpful for police.
