Patriotism & Community: Beaverton has both!

July means Independence Day celebrations, and as always, it’s a good time to think about what freedom really means. As a veteran with a husband who’s an active-duty Army officer and two daughters who are learning about service and community, patriotism is something we talk about a lot in our house.

But here’s what I’ve learned – real patriotism isn’t just about the parades and fireworks. It’s about doing the actual work to make our community stronger.

Thomas Paine understood this back in 1776. He didn’t just want America to break free from Britain – he wanted us to build something better. A place where ordinary people could have a real voice in government and see it make a difference in their daily lives. That was revolutionary thinking then, and honestly, it still is today.

That’s exactly what we’re working toward here in Beaverton. When residents tell us they need more affordable housing options, we’re not just listening – we’re building. When local businesses need support to thrive, we’re showing up with real solutions. When families want a vibrant downtown where they can live, work, and connect, we’re making the investments to create it.

These aren’t just campaign promises. They’re the daily work of making freedom and opportunity real for everyone who calls Beaverton home.

Now, I’ll be honest about something. July can be challenging for some of us veterans. Those fireworks that bring joy to so many can be tough to handle when you’ve been in combat. I know I’m not alone in this, and I’m grateful for neighbors who understand. So as we celebrate this Fourth of July, let’s be mindful of our veterans, our neighbors, and yes, our pets too.

This Independence Day, let’s celebrate what makes America great – not just with fireworks, but with the everyday work of building a community that works for everyone
