Play chess with us at Arby’s: Great location, great food and fun for everyone!

I was having lunch at the Arby’s one day (the one Cedar Hills Blvd, enjoying my roast beef sandwich when a light bulb went off. I took a look around: flat tables, comfy chairs, good lighting and we could get food and drink too.

I said to my wife, “This would be a good place for the Beaverton Chess Club!” She didn’t really care and kept eating but I was so excited.

I quickly found the manager, Doug Smith, and asked him if our chess club could meet here at Arby’s on Thursday nights from 5-9pm. As he scratched his head, I promised that our chess players are reasonably clean, mostly honest and very hungry. They also wouldn’t bother other customers. And with that, Doug said, “sure, we can give it a try.”

Arby’s has great food and Doug has a great staff who are happy to help if we have any problems. Our orders are filled so quickly, the chess players seem to spend more time eating than playing chess. I fear that soon we will have the fattest chess players in the state! In fact, players are starting to bet milkshakes on the games. It makes everyone play harder and I got a strawberry milkshake at the last meeting.

So, the Beaverton Chess Club will be meeting at the Arby’s at 2820 SW Cedar Hills Blvd on Thursdays, 5-9pm. As usual, everyone is welcome, just bring your chess sets and a good appetite.
