Playing musical cars with neighbors I didn’t know I had

Hello Loyal Beaverton Readers! For the month of July, I would like to tell you a story about the neighbors I didn’t know I had and how we met over coffee and cars.
One of my new neighbors, Rob, needed a good used car for his son, but we’ll get to him later. First, let me tell you about Sue since she called first and set up a meeting at a well-known diner to discuss the best way to go about purchasing a new 2025 Toyota Corolla.
When I arrived, Sue was already at a table reading a copy of the BRG. She asked me about my articles, and I told her that I had been writing the “Beaverton Car Guy” column since 2013. I find great pleasure in sharing my experience and answering automotive questions from readers. Plus, I do get the opportunity meet locals who need help buying or selling their cars.
As we were chatting, Rob sat down at the table next to us, also with a copy of the BRG in hand. When he overheard our conversation, asked if I was the same “Car Guy” whose face is in the paper. I smiled and said, “Yes. Yes, it is.” Rob explained that he has been looking for months for a good used car for his teenaged son. He considers himself vehicle savvy, however, due to the horrible car market these days, he was becoming quite discouraged.
My client, Sue, asked him to join us as we talked about getting Sue her new car. Rob listened to me gathering information from Sue. I took notes and then promptly made a call. ,Within a few minutes, I found a black Toyota Corolla with the specifications she asked for. It was exactly when she wanted. We covered pricing, as well as a quick delivery to my home office the very next day.
She then said “oh, that’s wonderful but what about my old Toyota Corolla? Rob’s ears perked up at this and asked about it but instead of telling him, Sue told him it was parked just outside and that he could take it for a test drive, no problem.
When Rob returned, he could tell it was well maintained and quickly asked how much she wanted for the car. Sue looked to me, so I did a little research looking up what the trade value was for trade, private party, as well as retail values. named a price a little above the trade in value and Rob agreed. They were both thrilled.
The following day, Sue and I met at my place to pick up her new car. Since it might take a little while to give her a tutorial about the new features of the car in addition to doing all the paperwork, I called Rob to head on over. It was only after he arrived in a few short minutes that we realized he lived only a couple blocks away in the Greenway neighborhood. Strangly, Sue also exclaimed that she lived right off of Sorrento Road as well!
As both parties departed with their “new” cars, I was certain that we would all see each other’s cars on Sorrento Road in the days to come.
