Promoting civic knowledge and celebrating our shared civic pride
For the first time, the Beaverton Area Community Foundation has partnered with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation to host the National Civics Bee regional competition for MS students in the Beaverton area. This event aims to encourage young Americans to engage in civics and contribute to their communities.
At the Civics Bee, Beaverton area MS students will demonstrate their civics knowledge, share ideas for improving their communities, and compete for cash prizes.
Students from across the region submitted essays identifying issues in their communities and proposed solutions. A distinguished panel of judges reviewed these submissions, and the top 20 students were selected to compete in the Beaverton Area Regional Competition, taking place on April 18, 2026, at the Arts and Communications Magnet Academy (ACMA).
This in-person event will feature two rounds of civics quiz questions. The top five students from the quiz rounds will participate in a live Q&A, where they will discuss their proposals with judges Nina Carlson, Government Affairs Manager at NW Natural; Edward Kimmi, Beaverton City Councilor; and Dr. Van Truong, Beaverton School District Board Member. The event will be emceed by Beaverton Community Foundation Chair and owner of EC Matrimony, Ernie Claeson.
The top three finalists from the regional competition will advance to the state competition, hosted by Oregon Business & Industry on June 16 in the House Chamber of the Oregon State Capitol in Salem.
