Protect Oregon’s First Responders: National Move Over Day, October 17

Every day across Oregon, from rural highways to city streets, our first responders put their safety on the line. Whether it’s a police officer, firefighter, paramedic, tow-truck driver, or even a stranded motorist, seeing flashing lights on the roadside should be a clear signal for caution. While October 17 is National Move Over Day, we can all do our part every day. Whenever you see flashing lights on the freeway, highway, or neighborhood street, slow down, move over, and give responders room to work safely.

What Oregon Law Requires (ORS 811.147)

Under Oregon law, when you spot a stopped vehicle with flashing lights (could be a tow truck, emergency vehicle, roadside assistance unit, or even a disabled car) you must:

Multi-lane roads (same direction): Safely change into a non-adjacent lane if possible, giving a wide clearance.

If lane change isn’t safe or possible: Reduce your speed to at least 5 mph below the posted limit.

Two-lane, two-way roads: Slow down similarly, by at least 5 mph under the limit.

This applies to any stopped motor vehicle using hazard or required warning lights, or where flares or signs indicate distress.

By slowing down and moving over, you help create a safer environment for everyone who travels Oregon’s roads, including the people who serve our communities every day.
