Providing Support through Community

Providing Support through Community

This fall, Dirkse Counseling and Consulting launched two new support groups for late diagnosed adults on the Autism Spectrum facilitated by Allie Patton MA MT-BC, Professional Counseling Associate. I asked Allie about her passion for working with groups, and how they benefit individuals.

What inspired you to start the group?

As a late-diagnosed autistic individual myself, I found there were not enough spaces or resources available for late dx folks to process this discovery and learn at the same time. For the parent support group, I think there’s not enough information out there about the newest and nuanced research in neurodiversity, and wanted to make sure parents of kids with a new diagnosis had that support and knowledge readily available. It’s a really overwhelming process to learn all of the information needed to parent a neurodivergent kid and I want parents to not feel alone.

What is the main objective?

For late-diagnosed: To assist clients in processing the emotions that come with this late discovery and be able to relate to others with the same experience.

Parent ed: To educate parents in all the topics they need to know about their neurodivergent child’s brain and internal experience.

How can you get involved?

You can share this information with anyone you feel might benefit from the service! (Also available on the Dirkse CC website.)
