Q&A with the Animal Shelter: How can I volunteer at the shelter?

Introducing a New Volunteer Ambassador Program and the Animal Services Academy
Washington County Animal Services and the Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter are excited to launch our new Animal Services Academy this September! This free program will be offered twice a year to anyone ages 16 or older in Washington County, with weekly Saturday morning trainings focused on resources we provide to the community. The fall session will be held online. Future sessions may take place in person.
Topics will include the importance of licensing your dog, code enforcement, investigating animal abuse and neglect, veterinary care, pet lost and found services, and daily animal care routines within the animal shelter.
After completing the 10-week Animal Services Academy, participants can apply to become an official Volunteer Ambassador! These specially trained volunteers help answer animal welfare questions within their own communities. Volunteer Ambassadors may share information with neighbors and friends informally (either online or in person) or represent Washington County Animal Services and the Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter at community events, such as farmers markets and local fairs and festivals.
Even if participants choose not to become Volunteer Ambassadors, the knowledge they will gain at the Animal Services Academy will still benefit them, our community, and the animals we share our lives with.
Space will be limited in the Academy. Keep an eye out for more information and registration details on our website later this summer. We hope you can join us to learn more about our services and to connect with your community!
Each month, you will have the chance to have your questions answered by the animal shelter.
