Spring is a time of beauty, growth and wildness (A Season in Just 3 Words)

Hello, my name is Kanako and if you couldn’t guess, it’s a traditional Japanese name that means Spring Flower Child. Can you guess what my favorite season is? Of course, it is spring and May is the best spring month of all. Why? Well, for me it comes down to just three simple words: beauty, growth, and wild.
Beauty: Flowers have such meaning to me (and it’s not just because of my name). They lift me up when I’m down, and if I’m already up, then it makes me want to write about it and share my joy.
Whenever I walk my dogs in the morning before school, I always see wonderful sights full of vibrantly colored flowers. As I walk past the big yellow daffodils, I smile to myself. Then I notice the bright pink and purple rhododendron out by the bus stop. I see light blue and white hydrangeas in my neighbor’s front yard and on the bus ride, we pass by an amazing sea of white/pink cherry blossoms.
But it’s not just flowers, spring also seems to bring beauty to people. Ever since the weather has been warming up, the kids at school started to wear more colorful outfits. It’s as if they too are blossoming just like the wildflowers around them. This quote seems to sum it up very nicely: “Flowers are like people beautiful in their own special way.”
Growth: In winter, the trees around my neighborhood were so bare and lifeless. I could easily see through them to the houses across the street. But as the weather started to warm, the trees weren’t dead, they were just getting ready to spring into life. And it’s not just the trees, all the plants are growing like crazy. In fact, over the winter we had these empty pots on our balcony filled with dirt but now they are full of clovers and wildflowers that we did not plant. We now even have a baby pear tree that somehow managed to find our balcony (it’s now my dad’s favorite!).
All these little plants are so strong as they grow. They go through a variety of challenges like heavy rains, powerful winds, and cold winters. They stay strong and, in the spring, they grow tall and bloom with big colors as if they are announcing to the world, “I’m here! I have arrived! I have survived!” I read that spring is proof that growth is possible.
Wild: Spring is like waking up after a long cold winter. Animals come out of hibernation and birds migrate back to find homes to make new nests. Insects, like butterflies and bumble bees, fly all over as they buzz around the flowers to feed. Animals mate and breed and by May, their newborns are exploring their new world. Squirrels are running wild. Insects are buzzing wild. Frogs are hopping wild. Wild sounds are everywhere. But it’s not just nature.
Spring is also wild and active at my school. It’s no wonder that sports like track & field, baseball, softball, tennis, golf, lacrosse and soccer are all enjoyed during the spring. It’s like the kids have so much more energy than if it were fall or winter. It’s almost like the kids were storing up all their energy during the other months so they can let loose for these spring sports.
In conclusion: As I write about spring having the characteristics of beauty, growth and wild, I thought I was just writing an essay about my favorite season. My mom pointed out, however, that I am also describing myself. She said I am always dressing in colorful floral outfits (beauty), at 15 years old, I’m almost as tall as she is (growth), and with all the running around I do every day as part of the track and field team, my wildness is on full display. I don’t know. I mean, she is the one who named me Spring Flower Child. And as the saying goes, mothers know best!
