The magic of finding something new in something old: My love for theatre has been rekindled

I’ve always been a fan of theater. I love the way we as humans tell stories with our voices and bodies. I joined my high school’s theater program as a Freshman but took a break until getting swept up in it again this spring.

Here is how I got back into theatre: I was walking in the Performing Arts Center when my friend ran up to me and reminded me of the upcoming play: Jane Austin’s classic Sense and Sensibility. I could not not audition — one simply does not turn away from Austin so easily!

I found myself playing Elinor, the sensible one of the Dashwood sisters, in the April performance. I also found myself surrounded by my closest friends, and all the people who had slipped away from my life when I left the stage for high school courtroom and mock trials during my sophomore and junior years.

There’s a saying about meeting people twice. They say that someone is meant to be in your life if you first meet them once and do not pay much attention, and then you meet them a second time and find yourself irrevocably attached.

I believe things can be the same way. Theater found me again and so the beauty of storytelling and bonding with others through story will never leave my life.

I love the idea of meeting twice as being part of our woven destiny. And even if you do not believe in destiny, there is something breathtaking about the way we humans form connections and love. I also find when life comes to a lull and you feel as if you are missing something, there’s always something or someone from the past that can lift you right back up again.

I hope everyone starts to see and appreciate their “second meeting person or thing” — I hope everyone gets to experience the magic of finding something new in something old.
