There are valuable resources to help you live well at home: The Art of Aging in Place, July 22, 11am

Aging in place is often the first choice for homeowners in their 70’s and older. Important considerations include stairs, health, yard work, and home maintenance.

  • Are the bedrooms, full bathroom, laundry and garage all on one level?
  • Can I maintain the home and yard or
  • Can I afford assistance to do so?

If these foundational considerations are answered with ‘yes,’ the next level of questions involves what needs to be done in the home to ensure safety.

  • Do I need to add grab bars or hand rails?
  • Is it time to evaluate tripping hazards such as rugs and the type of bath mat I use?
  • Can a wheelchair fit in the hallway or could a ramp be an option if needed in the future?
  • If I do not have a walk-in or roll-in shower now, can one be added?
  • Pull out shelves in the kitchen are a great help.

Considering alterations that eliminate the need to bend over is a valuable aspect when evaluating modifications. Falls often happen from lightheadedness after picking something up or from bending over and losing balance.

The cost of alteration to the home can certainly be worth it to help age in place. Remember to consider daily living activities, such as showering, eating consistently, staying hydrated, walking, exercise and socialization as these are also part of the aging-in-place ingredients that help keep you alert, healthy, and able to enjoy quality of life.
