Costa Rica – Long considered a mecca for adventure travel enthusiasts, Costa Rica offers dozens of heart-pumping experiences and expeditions. From white water rafting and mountain biking to zip-lining and hiking, the country ranks high on the radar of those who crave an adrenaline rush.

Named as the ‘Happiest Country in the World’ by Travel Channel, which noted its absence of a military force, a life expectancy of 88, and of course all those beaches, volcanoes and tropical forests.

Not surprisingly, Costa Rica caters to an eco-friendly crowd. From frill-free eco-lodges to ultra-luxe wilderness resorts, they embrace that goal.

You can find naturalist guides and adventure outfitters are readily available to introduce you to places like Rincon de la Vieja National Park, the active Arenal Volcano. Both have natural hot springs and waterfalls.

Other must-sees are the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve, a tropical paradise of flowers, trees, trails and birds. Manuel Antonio National Park is best known for its population of monkeys.

Nearly all major airlines serve Costa Rica’s two international airports. Travelers should choose the airport in closer proximity to their destination. For example, flights landing in San Jose Airport offer an easier access to the Caribbean and Central Pacific coasts. The other airport, Liberia Airport, lies farther north.
