Understanding Death, Dying, and Funerals – A Compassionate Perspective

Death is an inevitable part of life, yet it remains a topic many find difficult to discuss. Understanding death and the processes surrounding it can provide comfort and clarity during challenging times.
With each end-of-life journey being unique, similar components may resonate. Those may include hospice, funerals, and end-of-life celebrations. Until my father passed, I had a very uncomfortable relationship with death. I didn’t go to several funerals that I wish I would have attended because of fear of the unknown.
When he did pass, my mom and brother were with him at a hospice house. My sister and I had run to the store to get mom something to eat since she had not had anything all morning. When we left he was awake and smiling. While at the store, we received a text to return immediately. He was gone. Upon returning, I sat with him alone for about 5 minutes and during that time, I was able to talk with him and with God and realize that death is nothing to fear.
We were very fortunate as he and Mom had made their funeral arrangements 30 years earlier. This was a huge savings financially and mentally. With more burial options available now it saved us trying to make decisions for him, as it was enough putting his requests into action while still addressing our new reality.
