We are not powerless, come together & lift each other up

Community has always been the heart of Beaverton, but in these challenging times, it is more important than ever. With economic instability, global conflicts, and divisive national politics, it’s easy to feel powerless. Yet, we are not powerless. The path ahead seems difficult, but be assured, we will keep moving forward. Real change happens at the local level, in cities like Beaverton, where people still believe in the power of community to improve life not just for themselves, but for their neighbors.

Now, more than ever, we have the opportunity to define who we are as a city. Will we let uncertainty divide us? Or will we do what Beaverton does best—come together, lift each other up, and lead with compassion and action? I know the answer because I’ve seen it firsthand.

I’ve witnessed it in Beaverton’s policies, which ensure that all people, regardless of where they were born, feel safe and valued. I’ve seen it in our commitment to affordable housing, ensuring that families, seniors, and young people can continue to call Beaverton home. I’ve seen it in our police department’s focus on community-based safety, in our courts’ commitment to second chances, and in the resilience of our small businesses despite extreme economic challenges.

I’ve also seen it in Beaverton’s global reach, as we work with international partners and cultural organizations to strengthen our city’s voice in an interconnected world. Beaverton is not just an address; we are a community, a beacon of hope that shapes our future locally and globally.

Though we will face challenges, we have the power to counter isolation, division, and fear by staying connected and showing up for one another. If we do this, Beaverton will not only weather these uncertain times, but thrive through them. Let’s lift each other up, create opportunities, and make sure Beaverton continues to be a place of belonging, resilience, and most importantly – hope
