We love puppies! Too much of a good thing?

We all love puppies, but there definitely can be too much of a good thing! The economy, skyrocketing vet costs and an over-saturation in the pet market due to the residual effects of the demand for puppies during the pandemic have left us with an unmatched crisis in the pet rescue world.

At Indigo, we focus on “last chance” pets—essentially great animals with “quirks” that require special efforts for placement. In the past, we may have had two litters of puppies in any given year, and only because their mothers were in crisis.

The puppies were generally the easiest placements we’d have all year. But things have changed. In the past several months alone, we have had two emaciated mothers, giving birth to a total of 17 puppies and we’ve taken in another 6 puppies in crisis. Rescues are literally over-run with “perfect” puppies, and finding homes for those puppies is no longer easy in a flooded adoption landscape.

The good news is that now is a great time to adopt a puppy—or one of our wonderful “quirky” characters! You may just find the member of your family you’ve been missing and, because you’re adopting responsibly, you’ll be helping us end the cycle of unwanted puppies.
