Why so many kids are struggling with chronic health issues, but there is good news

If your child has been labeled with ADHD, anxiety, allergies, or even an autoimmune condition, you’re not alone. Today, nearly 40% of children live with at least one chronic health challenge. Even more troubling, prescriptions for powerful medications in kids have soared over the past two decades.
For many families, the journey feels endless—specialists, new treatments, and reassurances that kids will “grow out of it.” But often those early warning signs don’t just disappear. The fussy baby with reflux may become the toddler with sensory sensitivities, then the school-age child with attention or digestive struggles.
So, what’s really going on? Increasingly, research points to one overlooked factor: the nervous system. Stressors such as prenatal complications, birth interventions, environmental exposures, and repeated medications in early life can overload a child’s developing nervous system. When it gets “stuck” in a constant state of fight-or-flight, every part of the body can be affected—sleep, digestion, immunity, behavior, and emotional regulation.
The problem is that conventional medicine is built to treat acute issues, like infections or injuries, not long-term patterns of chronic stress. Standard tests rarely measure nervous system function, and most providers don’t have the tools or time to connect the dots between seemingly unrelated symptoms.
But there’s good news: children are not broken. When their nervous system is given the right support, they have an incredible capacity to heal and thrive. That starts with looking at the whole story—from pregnancy through today—and understanding how early stressors may have shaped current struggles.
Parents know their child best. Trusting your instincts, asking deeper questions, and seeking care that focuses on root causes—not just symptoms—can make all the difference. With the right support, your child’s best days are still ahead.
