Your Next Chapter Can Be One of Your Best

The kids grow up, careers wind down, routines shift, and suddenly the calendar doesn’t look quite as full as it once did. And while having a little more free time sounds wonderful, too much of it can leave us wondering, “Now what?”
Here’s the good news: your next chapter can be one of your best.
Purpose is personal. It may come from mentoring someone, volunteering for a cause you care about, sharing your knowledge, supporting a friend, joining a group, or learning something you’ve always been curious about. After decades of living, loving, working, raising families and navigating life’s ups and downs, you have something incredibly valuable: wisdom and experience. Sharing that with others is deeply rewarding—and it keeps us connected to the world around us.
Last night, I went to my 45th high school reunion. It was the first one I had attended, and it turned out to be the right one. It was a casual setting—a local rooftop bar. One night, not a weekend marathon, and everyone seemed to be in a really joyful place.
High school wasn’t the best time of my life, which is why I hadn’t attended before. I was awkward, on the outskirts of the social circuit, and struggled with how to fit in. But this time, I was ready. I was willing to put myself out there, trust myself and feel confident regardless of the outcome. Attending was the right decision. The night was beautiful, with a stunning sunset, open hearts and lots of hugs. It was empowering to show up as myself—not the younger version of me weighed down by self-doubt.
Staying engaged may require stepping outside your comfort zone, trying something new, or saying yes when your first instinct is to say, “No.” It can be a singular event or a continuous coffee group meeting. The key is consistency, feeling discomfort and doing it anyways. You might be surprised by where that yes leads.
